hello,I have a 20 yo african Grey female parrot with a history of psitticosis 10 yrs ago.Has been ok since then. Boarded her @ avian vet last week and Grey had routine labs done. The vet also ran a protein electrophoresis and told me albumin is elevated. not sure what she means...is my bird a chronic carrier of parrot fever? The vet is supposed to get back to me...
-- I completely understand your concern, especially after the previous diagnosis. Elevated albumin can be associated with much more than psittacosis though and in some instances not mean anything at all. Your vet, who I believe is a well versed, experienced avian vet, will use these test results together with other factors and labs to know whether you have anything to get to treating. And that's the good thing about all of this: A problem caught before there are symptoms is generally far more apt to be successfully treated than a problem with unmistakable symptoms. --- A couple of things to also consider would begin with the size of the sample taken and where from. For instance, if done with a short clipped toenail, there is a significant possibility of the result being tainted. A leg or wing vein draw (and jugular for larger samples) is more accurate, but let's not get ahead of ourselves right? Elevated albumin can be associated with all sorts of relatively easily treated infections; or liver problems (again, let's not go there just yet). ---- To answer your question simply and specifically: Yes, a bird can be a chronic carrier of psittacosis and show no symptoms or ill effects themselves. --- Will you check back when the rest of the labs are done or you talk to your vet and let me know what's going on? I'll be glad to help you no matter what it is you need to do
Thanks, I will probably know more this week. This vet, who is a new partner in the practice and hasn't treated my bird before, mentioned it could be an inflammatory process, so she did the electrophoresis and then left a message for me that an antibody was elevated.. The only other medical history for my bird is scoliosis of the spine, for which she was treated w/ Mobic twice in her life. She is not on any regular meds.FYI-they go for the jugular in this office, no pun intended, so most likely it was a good sample.I am just concerned because I called the vet yesterday as instructed, she was busy and I spoke to a tech instead. The tech was asking me if the bird was eating and drinking, I said yes she is, I only brought her to you for boarding, not symptoms. The tech wouldn't give me any more info.I will keep you posted...
