Hi,

Trimming of the wings isn't a necessary act for good health. But, in saying that, it can help keep them from injuring themselves. Wing trimming prevents sustained flight. Done well, they can glide down. Not being able to fly keeps them from getting into ceiling fans, windows, and getting away outside.
