My cockatiel is healthy and a good eater but has congestion (sounds like sniffles). I've been giving a few drops of Kids Biotic herbal mix. He is no worse but still has th congestion.

Hello:

Yes, garlic is safe for birds, in small amounts.

You may try greatly increasing the humidity in his room to see if that helps, and if not, I would recommend a visit to your avian vet (www.aav.org/vet-lookup) .

Good-Luck,

Dr. Lisa

Thank you! Are there specific foods/herbs I should avoid for cockatiels? Is there a website that covers things to avoid?

Things to avoid: anything that is consider human 'junk food' should be treated the same for birds. Avocado, chocolate (the darker the increased toxicity), alcohol are all toxic.

Here are some websites that will give you more comprehensive lists:

  • http://www.cockatielcottage.net/ (wonderful general information)
  • http://www.greyfeathertoys.com/html/safefoods.html (also has some feeding tips)

Good-Luck,

Dr. Lisa
