Customer Question

My 2 year old son has ear tubes. Today I thought he had gotten water in his ears at the splash pad because he was pulling at his ears so I used some hydrogen peroxide on a cotton ball to put a few drops in his ear thinking it would help dry the water out (what I've done to myself in the past) but he screamed like he was in so much pain. I felt horrible. A big chunk of wax came out of one ear and he did settle down after but he got so upset that I was worried he got hurt. I googled and it says that you shouldn't use hydrogen peroxide in ears with tubes. I wish I googled first! Did I do permanent damage to his ears? Should I call the on-call pedi or bring him to a walk in clinic? He's ok now and asleep (his normal bedtime) but I'm worried!

Thank you for your question.
I am Dr. Su S. and I will try my best to help you.
I am sorry for his symptoms.
Hydrogen peroxide can cause irritation, inflammation of middle ear.
So he felt the pain, discomfort with it.
As he is settled now & sleeping, the effect was not too severe.
You can observe.
If you feel his hearing is affected, I would advise to get him checked by ENT doctor.
I hope this information will be helpful.
