Customer Question

I am haunted by the vision of my 3 year old son after he sustained a traumatic brain injury in an accidental fall with his babysitter last Mag. His eyes were opened, he was unresponsive, and his eyes were open with an uneven, blank stare, one eye more dilated than the other. GCS 5. He looked dead, with his eyes open, yet he was breathing. He later died of his injuries. I need to know if he was conscious and why his eyes were open. Could he feel any pain? He fell off stairs pulling on a door lever with all of his strength and lost his grip, going back at an accelerated rate and great force. The first part of his body to contact the ground was the back of his head on the edge of a cement brick and rocks.

Sorry to hear about your son ...

GCS 5 , with open eye and dilated pupil indicates brain death and he is in vegetative state , he is pain insensitive , and just pray for him .

Good luck .

Positive feedback will be appreciated .

Thanks .

He has a response to pain, his medical records said GCS 5 with response to pain. But I saw his eyes, open, unresponsive, one eye not aligned with the other and different sized pupils. But he was breathing. Would he have know what was going on around him? They had to actually punch him to get a response to pain. He wasn't crying or showing visible signs of pain.

I meant pinch his arm to get a pain reaction

I guess I just don't understand his eyes being open if he was brain dead. He could have brain death that quickly after an accident, like within 5 mins?
Expert:  dr abid replied 8 months ago.

No , he was unaware as I mentioned , because he had brain death .

Breathing can occur even with brain death.

Open eyes are suggestive of non responsive eyes , no response with light .

This can happen within minutes of sustaining a brain injury? He was also posturing. Was the posturing and response to pain just a reflex?
Expert:  dr abid replied 8 months ago.

Yes even within minutes after injury , brain death can happen.

So this seems to be not a true reflexes .

there is no coming back from brain death? Why did the doctors even remove part of his skull if he was already brain dead? Could he have recovered?
Expert:  dr abid replied 8 months ago.

In emergency they have to make effort to remove blood from brain in order to restore life , they just try there level best .

But likely they knew he was already brain dead?
Expert:  dr abid replied 8 months ago.
