My 23-month old is having some shallowed/labored breathing

Customer Question

My 23-month old is having some shallowed/labored breathing (mostly sounded like super stuffy nose/clog) initially - so breathing through her mouth...
Normally, I wouldn't be overly concerned; however during her bath this evening she swallowed a tiny bit of water (she was standing up and during the final rinse, had her mouth open). She coughed a bit and when asked if she was okay, she nodded and seemed fine after that.
Although it is probably just a normal something, I'm concerned perhaps she aspirated a bit or anything that could possibly lead to secondary drowning or ???

Greetings,

Thank you for your question.

I am Dr. Su S. and I will try my best to help you.

A little aspiration of water can happen during bath.

It should not cause secondary drowning effect.

Viral infection, cold allergy can be a factor.

But labored or shallow breathing can be due to bronchospasm.

You have switched on humidifier.

In mild case, it can help.

In bronchospasm she can need bronchodilator and other medicine as nebulizer.

I would suggest to take her to hospital for an evaluation and management.

I hope this information will be helpful.
