Customer Question

1.5 year old son got a hemoglobin test done 6 months ago it was at 8 which we were told was low so was given drops. 3 months follow up it went up to 11 which was normal. Today a test was done at hemoglobin level is at 10.1. Should we be concerned? We had blood work taken and all shows normal FYI.

Greetings,
Thank you for your question.

Is he taking iron drops till now?
How is his food intake and weight gain?

Expert:  Dr. Yogindra Vasavada replied 1 year ago.

Hello, If other tests are normal, and he is keeping good health otherwise, no need to worry and accept this low normal value. He will need daily or alternate day iron drops in maintenance dose till around 3-4 years age when he is more physically active, and a higher normal hemoglobin level is required.

Expert:  Dr. Su S. replied 1 year ago.

Hello again,

At this age hemoglobin level varies from 10.5-13.5.

There can be variation among labs.

The cause of falling hemoglobin level needs to be determined.

After 1 year there can be deficiency in iron due to less intake of iron rich cereals or food.

Drinking a lot of cow's milk can cause less intake of other iron rich food leading to anemia.

He would need supplements & follow up after a few months.

Please try to give him iron rich food.

Here is a link on it.

There can be blood loss with stool.

A stool test can be taken if not done already.

I hope this information will be helpful.
