This answer was rated:

My 11 month old's x-ray showed calcified appendicolith. What does that mean?

Thank you for your question.

I am Dr. SS. I will try my best to help you.

What was his symptom?

Why X-ray was taken?

What treatment was advised?

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

He has constipation and belly pain. He had no fever or vomiting. He had an x-ray taken which showed the calcification. He was sent for an ultrasound and she could not find his appendix which she said is common in his age because it is so small and he had so much poo in his intestines. So they sent us home.

Thank you for the input.

Appendicolith is a deposit in appendix which has got calcified or like a stone.

This can appear opaque on X ray.

Sometimes, it is associated with appendicitis but it is not specific for diagnosis of appendicitis which is rare in infants.

In other cases it can be an incidental finding.

Sometimes, an ingested foreign body or artifact can be confused with appendicolith.

As the ultrasound could not detect any sign of appendicitis or enlarged appendix, it is not worrying.

You need to observe only. Constipation can also cause pain.

If the pain gets worse or continues, you need to take a review by doctor.
