My 9 month old son has had a fever 102.8 last night and 101.8

Resolved Question:

My 9 month old son has had a fever 102.8 last night and 101.8 today (rectally). The fever came on suddenly 5 days ago out of nowhere and has persisted. His pediatrician saw some ulcers on the back of his throat today and hopes it is just a herpes simplex virus but said to be concerned if the fever remained today and to call if the fever remains... This is the fifth day and his fever is still at 101.8. He also started having a super runny nose yesterday (day 4). No signs of an ear infection. Should I be concerned and call the emergency nurse? What could this be worse case?

Louise Sivak, M.D. :

Hello, This is likely a viral upper respiratory infection infection ; these can last 7-10 days. I would call his treating pediatrician againIF cough starts new or any trouble breathing, he is not drinking enough to stay hydrated, he acts totally listless or way too irritable, or you are worried and not comfortable with how he looks / acts.

HSV can cause runny nose and throat ulcers.

Customer:

I have been treating him with Tylenol round the clock for going on 6 days now... Should I continue and is this harmful to his new developing liver??? Thanks!
