Customer Question

My son has had type 1 diabetes, diagnosed for the last 5 months and developed a very bad cramp in 1 of his thigh muscles, it seems to have eased but he is still limping and a bit sore a day later. Could this be caused by high blood sugers (they are OK, but we are still working to contro) and weeing too much etc

Greetings,

How long the symptoms are there? Is there any other symptom?
How is his blood sugar now a days? When did he have last blood tests?

Regards.

Hi
I think his leg has been annoying him a bit on and off for the last 2-3 weeks but he woke just the once in the early hours of the morning with the severe leg cramp, that was yesterday.
No other symptoms.
He hasn't had any blood tests since diagnosis.
His average blood glugose level recently was 8 ish but he does still have highs.

Thank you for the input.

In diabetes, there can be dehydration, electrolyte changes. Those can cause muscle cramps. Dehydration can be the possible cause of leg pain. Frequent urination can be due to uncontrolled diabetes. In uncontrolled diabetes, there can be increased incidence of infection. In urinary infection, frequency can be more. He should have regular blood or urine test before to keep the sugar under control. It is difficult to control diabetes in children. But regular follow up with doctor is needed to control the blood sugar. Keeping sugar under control is vital for growth and development of the children. I think you should take him to doctor and have a management plan for him. Pediatric diabetic specialist or endocrinologist will be helpful to have good control of sugar.
