Is caffeine safe for infants? Someone I know gives her baby diluted tea and Pepsi, "with the approval of the baby's doctor". As a mother and grandmother, I've never heard of this.
Optional Information: Person's Gender: Female Age: 55
Hi, Welcome to Just Answer! If you have questions after reading my answer, be sure to let me know.
caffeine sometimes is prescribed in preterm babies to facilitate breathing ( to treat apnea of prematurity)
It has got a stimulant effect
But caffeine should be avoided in otherwise normal infants as it can cause irritatability
Please define 'preterm' and 'apnea of prematurity'.
Studies have shown that it can cause a serious side effect called necrotizing enterocolitis ( disease affecting the gut)
preterm mean premature babies ( babies born before 37 weeks)
apnea of prematurity is a condition affecting premature babies in which their breathing becomes irregular and stop in between
Any more questions?
This is a household in which two adults rely heavily on caffeine and sugar, the oldest child has been diagnosed ADD and the middle child (7 years) consumes a great deal of sugar. This is the reason that I question the "doctor approval".
The infant was two weeks premature.
how old is the premature child now
5.5 months
the older children can have it. Since it has got stimulant effect it is effective for ADD
but it should be avoided in 5.5 months old infant
