Customer Question

Hi! My 18 month old presents with bright green clay-like stool intermittently. (I am a nursing student on my first semester, and I have never seen this) It normally appears after she hasn't had a bowel movement for 1-2 days. She recently had a sinus infection (last day of her amoxicillin was approx. 3 weeks ago). She is having a head cold again, from something going around in daycare. So she alternates between diarrhea and constipation and then greep stool. Is there something serious I should worry about? When would we want to conduct an ultrasound?

Thank You,

Karina

Dr.FiscusMD :

I'll do my best to answer your question. If you're available for chat, let's get started. If not, I can switch to an e-mail format.

Dr.FiscusMD :

HI! Stools can vary widely in color. Green is not particularly concerning and if she is generally otherwise well there's really nothing you need to do (or could do) about it. It likely is related to diet. Think about things that she eats that might be blue (blue gatorade, jello, etc) as blue going in usually means green coming out. You might not be able to identify what's causing it, but there's really no concern there. An ultrasound would not provide any further information for you.

Dr.FiscusMD :

Feel free to reply with questions/clarifications as needed.

Customer :

Thank you! So the liver enzymes would have nothing to do with this? And the rapid food transit?

Dr.FiscusMD :

No. We see funky stools all the time. Its really meaningless.

Customer :

Aha! My mom just confessed to feeding her blueberry treats.

Dr.FiscusMD :

AH HAAA!!!! :o)

Customer :

Thank you so much for your time. I am satisfied :-)
