My daughter (8 yrs) woke up with a headache this morning at the top of her head and has had it all day. She also has a fever of around 101. What do you think it is? At what point should I take her to the doctor?

Nothing, just rest.
I'm happy that you have asked me to assist you with your child and hope that you can benefit from my many years of helping parents like you.
You can watch her for 24-48 hours but you should also take a look at her throat to see if it is red and feel her neck to see if any glands are swollen or sore since strep does not always cause a sore throat at her age.
Any time I see a child her age with fever and headache I always check for strep since her symptoms go along with that illness, as well as decreased appetite, nausea and even vomiting sometimes.
Again, you can just give her tylenol or advil for a day or so to see what else develops but if her throat look infected you should take her in sooner rather than later.
Did this information help?
Chat times out every 5 minutes so please let me know if you need more information. Thanks.
Yes, that helps. I have not actually seen her yet as I have been at work. I will know more when I see her later. As far as I know, she is not vomiting and still has her appetite.
Just check her throat and lymph nodes then since strep can make them feel pretty bad quickly.
Will I be able to tell easily if her lymph nodes are swollen?
Yes, they will feel like knots in the front of her neck and may be tender to touch.
