Customer Question

Greetings,
I have a 7 and a half month old baby. Her spoon fell into the thrash can. I put it in the dishwasher, will it be enough to sterilize it or should I do something else? Thanks...

David L. Hill, MD, FAAP :

Hi, and welcome to Just Answer! I have to say, I'm a little amazed it's taken this long for one of your infant's spoons to have fallen somewhere gross! You must be quite diligent! I can reassure you that a simple washing of any sort, hand-washed or machine, will do the trick to clean the spoon. Once it's been cleaned and dried it will be a lot more sterile than most of the things your daughter will put in her mouth!

Customer :

We're first time parents and just too careful with the kid. There were also clorox disinfecting wipes in the thrash can. If the spoon touched it, is there anything to be concerned?

David L. Hill, MD, FAAP :

Really not. Most spoons are made of hard, impermeable materials like metal, plastic, or rubber. There is no reason to think that any contaminant, whether chemical or biological, would not wash off with soap and warm water.

Customer :

Thanks so much for your help!!
