If a 7 month old has thrush, how much nystatin should you give

This answer was rated:

If a 7 month old has thrush, how much nystatin should you give? What if an adult dosage was given and the baby has diarrhea? Please advise. Apparently the grandparents gave an adult dosage (not sure). Should dehydration be an issue at this point, or are there other side effects?

Dr. Yogindra Vasavada :

Hello JC, Nystatin is not absorbed orally so as soon as diarrhea stops, start with treatment in pediatric dose. Please give extra sugar water or pedialyte liberally meanwhile to obviate dehydration. There should be no concern about other side effects as it is not absorbed.

Dr. Yogindra Vasavada :

At the most you could give her probiotic powder or drops for the duration of treatment with nystatin.

Dr. Yogindra Vasavada :

Formula feeds can be continued as per schedule and any type of fluid can be given in between according to her acceptance.
