my grandson aged 4 has a cough which wakes him at night, sporadic fever, he is listless and won't eat. this has been going on for 5 days, waht should be done?

Thanks for your question. A cough persistant with a fever and decreased oral intake typically is an infection. The question is what kind, is it jus a cold, an ear infection, a sinus infection, or a pneumonia or bronchitis. The only way to determine the difference would be with a detailed exam from his health care practitioner. If he has trouble breathing or does not look well, you should go immediately to the ER

I am not really happy with this answer as you have given me no advice about what could be wrong with him or how to help him apart from take him to the ER if he can't breathe, which is obvious!
