Hi, angel - I'm sorry to hear that your daughter's lipid levels are elevated. There is quite a bit of controversy about cholesterol and triglyceride levels these days and what should be the best levels.

In children the generally accepted levels for total cholesterol are less than 170 (that's measured in mg/dL) and for LDL - less than 110. However there has been some recent evidence that indicates that levels for total cholesterol less than 150 and LDL less than 100 would be much better for the person. They would also like to see HDL levels above 45 and triglycerides less than 200.

How to achieve these levels. Mainly through diet and exercise. A diet high in fiber (lots of fruits and vegetables) and low in fats (lots of poultry and fish, less red meat). And make sure your daughter spends a couple of hours outside playing and getting exercise every day.

I hope this is helpful for you.

Expert's Answer

It is not dangerous as yet, but the build up of plaque in her arteries is starting. The one thing you cannot fight is heredity. She has inherited her elevated lipid levels. Talk to her pediatrician about this. He or she may want to start her on medications.
