Is 250 mg of azithromycin safe for an 8 year old to take

Resolved Question:

She has an abscessed tooth and is allergic to amoxcillan so the dentist prescribed azithromycin. She s 8 years old and about 60 pounds. It is a five day dose. Is that a safe amount for her to take?

The dosing for azithromycin in children is about 10mg to 13mg per kilogram per day.

Since she weighs about 60 lbs, this translates to about 27 kilograms, and thus 250mg of azithromycin is close to the appropriate dosing.

So this appears to be a safe dose to take, according to the FDA dosing recommendations.
