My six year old daughter has two spots of white hair ...

Resolved Question:

My six year old daughter has two spots of white hair on her head. Just a few strands in each spot. Also, the skin under the white hair appears slightly paler than the rest of the skin on her head. She develped this over the past year. She is otherwise extremely healthy. Any ideas?

Hello there

what you are seeing is vitiligo on the head (skin lightening) and poliosis which is when the depigmentation leads to loss of hair color. More than likely, this is an isolated finding and will not lead to any more similar patches of skin and hair whitening. Sometimes, you can expect to see more of these types of changes on her skin. You should have her doc examine her to make sure this is indeed the diagnosis. Dr. Stevens
