Our good family friends have an 8-year-old son, Joe, who is the same age as our son, Bob. They go to the same school and have been good friends since they were babies. We noticed recently that Joe has been bullying Bob—openly putting him down and turning some of the neighborhood boys against him. This has obviously made our son very frustrated and sad. As parents we don’t know what to do. Should we discuss it with our friends? Can they really do anything?
Hello and thank you for consulting JA,

I can see you are in a delicate situation. There is something you can do about it. Schools are very in tune to bullying situations. Most schools now have educational programs for this problem. Joe and Bob both need information...Joe about the effect that his bullying is having and Bob on how to be assertive and ask Joe to change. So you and the other parents can present this problem to the guidance counselor at school. Of course this will necessitate you telling the other parent but, at least, you are not asking them to solve the problem but just to give permission to have guidance get involved. Then, guidance counselor can provide the boys with the information they need and get there friendship on the right track.

I hope that this helps and warm regards
