Hello and thank you for consulting JA,

It takes several days to weeks for babies to self-regulate...that is....be able to self soothe and fall asleep on their own. So this might be normal. It could also be colic. The warmth of your body probably feels good and soothing and then lying on back is not as comfortable to him.

First swaddle him tightly in a receiving blanket. Then, lie him on his side (rather than back) with a rolled up blanket or towel at his back and one in front too. You are trying to simulate what it feels like when you are holding him.

If it is colic...it means he is having a stomach ache. If you are breast feeding, think of things that might be gassy (like lots of vegetables or spicy foods). If you are not breast feeding, a change of formula might be in order. Also make sure that he does not have a fever. If he does, he should be seen immediately at the closest emergency room. Fever in a newborn is very serious.

Good luck...
