Have Parenting Questions? Ask a Parenting Counselor for Answers
Hello and Thank You for using Just Answer. Could you tell me a little background about the child in question:
1. How old is the child?
2. How long has the cutting been occurring?
3. What object is being used?
4. Is there any history of emotional or behavior problems?
she is 16, her boyfriend broke up with her, she cut her hand saying love sucks
I think this was the first time.
very disrespectful and short tempered
Many teen age girls cut themselves after such seemingly traumatic events for attention. It seems to have become a fad as the girls will show each other their "battle scars." The more attention she gets, she may even repeat the cutting again but more severe. Also, some individuals get an adrenaline rush cutting themselves by actually seeing the blood. If this has been her first time occurrence, talk to her about her feelings in an open and honest way. If you can not seem to get through to her, professional counseling may be the next course of action as there may be other deeply rooted problems that an outside source can help her cope with.
Hope this has provided you with some insight. Have a great evening.
