The sciatica pain increases on lying down straight because the space available for the nerve decreases when you are lying straight on your back.

There is a relative increase in space when you sit up.

The other way to increase the space and hence decrease the pain is to lie down with your knees bent with a large pillow under either or both knees.

If you have to lie on your side you should bend your knees and keep a pillow between the knees.
