orthosportsdoc :

Hello there.

orthosportsdoc :

I'm sorry you are having this problem with your big toe.

orthosportsdoc :

When did you injure it? How did you injure it? Did you go to the ER? Did you get seen by an Orthopedic Surgeon? Did they take xrays? How did they describe the fracture?

Customer :

I broke it 2 weeks ago and my friends said..just wrap it together with the next toe...which did..after 2 weeks the ain was too much...went to podiatrist..took xray its broken..he wrapped it by itself and i bought that shoe

Customer :

i slipped in the tub shaving my legs and it hit the tub full face on

orthosportsdoc :

In general a hard soled shoe is recommended to prevent displacement (separation) of the fracture (break of the bone). It is not meant to keep the toe straight. The natural bending or movement of the toe will usually not displace the fracture. If the fracture is severe or separated enough that they do not think it will heal without surgery then they will do surgery to put a pin in the toe and then put you in a hard-soled shoe.

Customer :

ok so if I feel the toe moving even in the ugly shoe..thats ok

Customer :

and its throwing off my other leg and so my left hip hurts

orthosportsdoc :

yes normal shoes will put pressure on the toe and force it down into the second toe. also when you walk in a normal shoe the big toe gets a lot of pressure on it through the stages of the walking stride. The hard soled fracture shoe is meant to make sure that the toe does not get pressure in any wrong directions.

orthosportsdoc :

are you using crutches?

orthosportsdoc :

if you have a copy of the xray you can post it here and i would be willing to take a look at it.

Customer :

no he didnt say i needd them...i just feel like the toe has a burning sensation

Customer :

but i did alot of walking and carrying today..so that may be why

orthosportsdoc :

an alternative to the hard soled shoe is to use a fracture boot, also known as a CAM boot, this is sort of like a ski boot except is it open in the front and top. it has a hard bottom that is rocker shaped and allows you to rock from heel to toe. for my patients who walk a lot i prefer this to a hard soled shoe.

orthosportsdoc :

however if your insurance does not cover it then it is more expensive.

Customer :

that is even more classy looking...i just want to make sure that if the tope does bend when i walk its ok...even though i am walking in the shoe

Customer :

thr toe just naturally bends..i cant keep it completely flat even in the shoe

orthosportsdoc :

yeah it is not the most aesthetically pleasing thing to wear the boot but i was just giving a suggestion if you are going to be walking a lot. otherwise it is fine if the toes bends in the hard soled shoe. anyways, i hope i have answered your question. feel free to message me or ask follow up questions. if in the future you would like to get to me you can go into your chat history and click on my username or you can send a message with the title "For OrthoSportsdoc Only" and it will get routed to me.

orthosportsdoc :

thanks and good luck to you.
