Customer Question

My sister is having pain in her ear. Both her internist and her oncologist saw nothing. But she had full brain radiation finished the first week in January for metastasis of four small spots in her brain, after chemo and radiation for small cell lung cancer. Could the pain be caused by the radiation or is it more likely the lung cancer is back in her brain?

This is Dr. David

pain in the ear can be from a pinched nerve high up in the neck

or could be due to trigeminal neuralgia of the trigeminal nerve in the brain.

after radiation therapy, the brain mets should be smaller and shouldn't be causing pain.

but radiation can cause dry skin around the ear and in the ear canal

radiation can also cause fluid in the inner ear and cause muffled hearing

if she has dryness of the skin around the ear and ear canal, she might benefit from some moisturizing oils around the ear of the skin.
