Customer Question

Dr david,

I am a 38 yearl old male, 5'9, 142 lbs. I have a history of gastritis and ibs. For the past 6 days I have had a come and go burning sensation in my stomach on the left side during the day, with a lot of flatuelence. In the past two or three days , I have woke up in the middle of the night with stomach pain that I can best describe as the feeling of being hungry, but I am not . It is an abdominal discomfort feeling that does keep me awake. 2 years ago I had a ct scan of abdmen that was normal, and 5 months ago I had a normal ultrasound of abdomen. I am very concerned that this is being caused by pancreatic cancer. I know it's rare in a 38 year old... Should I be concerned about this now with my symptoms of 5 or 6 day? It's just concerning me that when laying down at night is when it s most noticeable...

Dr. David :

Hello, this is Dr. David. I have read your question and am ready to help.

Dr. David :

no, I don't think your symptoms are being caused by pancreatic cancer.

Dr. David :

I think you are most likely having gastritis type symptoms.

Dr. David :

this is most likely caused by increased production of stomach acid in the stomach

Dr. David :

have you tried any antacids in the middle of the night or not eating so close to bed time?

Customer : I take dexilant
Dr. David :

you might need to take the dexilant at night

Dr. David :

or switch to something stronger like nexium or protonix to take at night or twice a day for a short period of time.

Dr. David :

talk to your doctor about those options.

Dr. David :

or you might need to drink some milk or eat a small snack in the middle of the night to get some food in your stomach

Customer : The fact that I have persistent stomach discomfort this morning doesnt make you more inclined to believe its pancreatic cancer?
Dr. David :

nope.

Dr. David :

more like just an empty stomach with acid in it causing gastritis.
