Customer Question

Have a '93 0lds 88 Royal, the engine has a knock in the bottom end when revved up and then the engine will kill, it will start up again but only run a couple seconds and die. What could make it die and then not want to start and keep running? If you dont rev it up when you first start it it will sit and idle just fine. It only has 137,000 miles on it.

is this knocking noise under the oil pan or from the lower crankshaft balancer ?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
They checked the harmonic balancer and said it was ok.
Expert:  Gary replied 1 year ago.

if this engine will make this knocking noise with the engines drive belt OFF the engine there is an internal failure of a bearing

have the engine run with the belt off if you hear this noise still the oil pan needs to be removed to find out which bearing has failed

a failed bearing can cause the engine to bind and lock up and stall the engine

that knocking noise has to be fixed next

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
One mechanic suggested it migh be a bad crank sensor, you think that would cause it to stall and not want to start?
Expert:  Gary replied 1 year ago.

it could be causing the stall but the big issue is that noise inside the engine which can also cause the stalling

if it was just stalling with NO engine noises we would be going at this another direction but with the noise the noise has to be corrected first

Ok, i will see how much to drop oil pan and replace the bad bearing, thanks.
