Customer Question

Hi, I'm Dan,98 Bravada, died on road, pulled to my shop, changed cap & rotor, spark plugs(witch were all wet),fuel filter, drained fuel & put 4 gallons in, now it will start once in a while, run for a couple seconds then die, once in a while it will backfire. Got any suggestions what to try next?

Welcome to JustAnswer, my name is ***** ***** I'm here to help get your problem solved. Have you tried to see if it will stay running on starting fluid? If not, will you? thanks.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
it doesn't do anything on starting fluid
Expert:  Dan replied 2 years ago.
This would point toward no spark, have you checked spark during no start?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
yes, has good spark
Expert:  Dan replied 2 years ago.
Have you checked ignition timing with scan tool or inspected distributor gear? If spark and fuel are good, timing is about the only thing left.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
set engine on tdc of # ***** took cap off & rotor was on # ***** location

Any codes set in computer?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
no

I'm going to open question up to see if someone else has some ideas. I'd recommend using a spark tester to verify wires can jump at 30kv gap on tester. If good then I'd look into timing problem or worn distributor. I'll open question up incase someone has more to add, thanks.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I can't believe it is timing because yesterday it would for a short time then die, today all I have had is 1 backfire and nothing else

can you perform a compression test on all 6 cylinders so we can rule out low compression as in issue ?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
this engine only has 9000 miles on a rebuild, I can only get to 3 cylinders fairly easy, took compression of these 3, had 120 on all 3. When I took the plugs out, they were wet, can blow them off and the engine will run for a short time.
Expert:  Gary replied 2 years ago.
have you tried a new crank sensor yet ?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
no, how can I check this
Expert:  Gary replied 2 years ago.
when these will back fire the timing is usually being triggered incorrectly
since the fuel pressure and compression is good this issue should come down to the spark timing
they do not give us the ohm reading of that sensor
usually its just pick up a new GM one and see if it stops doing this
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
ok I'll give this a try , but I don't understand how it runs so good when it runs then dies,
Expert:  Gary replied 2 years ago.
very hard to say why but at this point everything else is checking out
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Is this the sensor on the bottom of the timing chain cover?
Expert:  Gary replied 2 years ago.
yes
