I think you need to change the settings for scanning, in your scanning software. If set to a too-high resolution (usually measured in d.p.i. or dots-per-inch), there will be so much fine detail in the scan, that the scan will tend to be very slow. It may also come out looking 'shrunk' or 'fine-print' quality.
