Can you tell me a bit more about the problem please:1) Is this a dedicated fax line, or a shared voice/fax line?2) Is this a landline from the local phone/cable company, or a VOIP service (vonage/magicjack/etc)3) Do you have dsl service on the same line?
4) Are you getting any specific error message?
This was not a yes or no question. I need to know specifically what type of line this is (dedicated/shared, copper or digital/cable/fiber based, etc)

Can you please double check that the cord from the wall jack to the canon is plugged into the #1 (line) jack, and not into the #2 (tel/tad/ext) jack?

So the next step is that you need to go into the setup menu, in the receive settings, and set it to auto answer (FAX ONLY) mode.
Then try a test fax.
Well if you are getting a message, that has nothing to do with your actual canon equipment. It means there is a voicemail account that is active on this line, and it is picking up before the canon ever has a chance to. There is no reason to have VM on a fax line, so you need to call the phone company and have them disable that feature.
