Customer Question

Hello! I went to the ER the night before last for bleeding (I am 6 and a half weeks pregnant). I was diagnosed with a bacterial infection and prescribed flagyl. I have taken 2 doses so far but am reading that it might not be safe. I see my OB in a week. Should i stop taking it or continue?

My OB is a new doctor for me and her nurse can't give me medical advice until they have seen me.

Dear customer,

Thank you for your question.

In pregnancy metronidazole may be prescribed when indicated, as metronidazole has not been definitively shown to be harmful during pregnancy. Failure to treat some bacterial infections during pregnancy may result in preterm birth, low birth weight, and other adverse fetal outcomes. Therefore you need to take the medication as adviced by your doctor.

Take care.
