Customer Question

Hi, I am a 41 year old female. My doctor says I have a complex cyst on my right ovary from an ultrasound I had last week. I have an appt later this week to follow up, but am very worried. The nurse said when i come in she wants me to have CA125 blood test and will likely rescan in a few months. After looking up this blood test, it seems it is a test for ovarian cancer. Should I be very worried? The cyst was not very big, she said. Thanks.

Hello,

basically an ovarian cyst can be defined easily as benign by ultrasound examination. Testing CA 125 makes no sense in this case, tumor markers like this can only be used to check the progression of already known cancer. I would recommend another check-up in 1 month, if the cyst has grown then, a laparoscopy would be advisable to remove it. I think it´s not a serious reason to worry.

Best regards,
