My husband and I are trying for a baby, and Im trying to understand

This answer was rated:

My husband and I are trying for a baby, and I'm trying to understand my cycle. I'm 31, and have been off hormonal birth control for at least 3 years.

For instance, I have had light spotting for the past 2 days, with no signs of a flow so far. That is typical, I usually have days of light spotting then very heavy flow for 1-2 days and light spotting at the end.

When tracking, and trying figure out what day I'm at in my cycle, do I count the spotting days as the first day of my period, and stop when the spotting ends?

Dr. Owen :

Yes, you would count the first day you spot as the first day of your period.

Dr. Owen :

And, since you have been trying for 3 years - you really should get evaluated for a few problems that couples have trying to get pregnant.

Dr. Owen :

1. You should get your thyroid checked with a TSH thyroid blood test

Dr. Owen :

2. You should have your husband get a sperm /semen analysis to check for any abnormalities

Dr. Owen :

4. and, you should be checked for any possible thrombophilias (these are blood clotting disorders)

Dr. Owen :

3. You should be checked for PCOS - polycystic ovarian syndrome

Dr. Owen :

These are the common reasons why women can not get pregnat.

Dr. Owen :

I hope this helps

Customer:

We haven't been trying since I went off the hormonal birth controll. We used condoms religiously during that time.

Dr. Owen :

oh - okay

Dr. Owen :

Well I think my first statement then helped when you should start counting

Customer:

My thryoid is low and I take medication daily for it. And in the past 6 months my levels got lower, due to human error I think. I have just had another blood test to check yesterday. The last 3 months I have never missed a day.

Dr. Owen :

Okay - you should be fine then

Dr. Owen :

I wish you well

Dr. Owen :

and if you are having trouble getting pregnant in a year of trying - then I would do those tests I suggested

Dr. Owen :

I hope this helps

Dr. Owen :

thank you, XXXXX XXXXX

Dr. Owen :

Thank you for your questoins

Customer:

Yes, thank you very much. I will keep in mind the other things you suggested. My thyroid is our first concern to get under control, as well as understanding.

Dr. Owen :

And, then I would also make sure you are taking prenatal vitamins too
