Hello. I gave birth 11 months ago. For the past two months I have had heavier discharge, a normal period, but much worse cramping and back pain. For the past month I have had pink, blood-tinged discharge. I am very concerned about cervical cancer as a result of searching on the internet....

Dr. Pfeiffer :

hello

Dr. Pfeiffer :

what baby was that for you?

Dr. Pfeiffer :

how did you deliver?

Customer:

vaginally, at 36 weeks, 5 days

Dr. Pfeiffer :

baby 1?

Customer:

yes, sorry

Dr. Pfeiffer :

congrats..

Customer:

thank you

Dr. Pfeiffer :

breast feeding?

Customer:

i stopped at 7 months

Dr. Pfeiffer :

any problems with loosing the baby weight

Customer:

i resumed normal periods at six weeks

Customer:

no, my daughter has food intolerances so i was not eating dairy or soy and lost the weight as a result

Dr. Pfeiffer :

any pain with intercourse?

Customer:

no

Dr. Pfeiffer :

how about bleeding afterwords

Customer:

a little

Dr. Pfeiffer :

how long has that been going on

Customer:

not much different than the normal pink discharge i've been having, but yes, there is some blood

Customer:

i've had heavier, watery discharge for about two months

Customer:

and noticed that it is consistently very lightly tinged with pink blood for about a month

Dr. Pfeiffer :

have you ever had an abnormal pap test?

Customer:

no

Customer:

but my last pap smear was almost a year before my pregnancy

Customer:

if memory serves

Dr. Pfeiffer :

we usually do them at the first visit

Dr. Pfeiffer :

of pregnancy...

Dr. Pfeiffer :

you sure you didn't have one then?

Customer:

i switched doctors after my first visit after pregnancy, so I am not sure, but they may have done one. I guess they would have

Dr. Pfeiffer :

ok...probably didn

Dr. Pfeiffer :

did

Dr. Pfeiffer :

but to your knowledge...no abnormals for you

Customer:

if they did, it was obviously normal at the time

Customer:

no

Customer:

no abnormals

Dr. Pfeiffer :

ok

Customer:

and no STDs or anything else abnormal

Dr. Pfeiffer :

ok

Dr. Pfeiffer :

any pain or burning with urination

Customer:

no

Dr. Pfeiffer :

how about constipation

Customer:

as of the last two days

Customer:

but not before that

Dr. Pfeiffer :

ok

Dr. Pfeiffer :

any odor to this discharge...or irritation, burning, etc

Customer:

there is not noticeable odor, no irritation or burning or anything else, just that it is very moist and lately has been pinkish

Dr. Pfeiffer :

ok.

Dr. Pfeiffer :

so based upon everything you have told me...it's extremely unlikely to be cervical cancer

Customer:

even though I am using protection, i was convinced i was pregnant last month b/c of the combination of cramping / back pain and the pink discharge. but i am not pregnant

Customer:

oh good

Customer:

thank you

Dr. Pfeiffer :

I understand that's what you will see when you read on the internet...

Dr. Pfeiffer :

cervical cancer typically takes about 10 years to develop

Dr. Pfeiffer :

typically there is a history of abnormal pap tests...

Dr. Pfeiffer :

not a one time thing then cancer..

Dr. Pfeiffer :

so extremely unlikely

Customer:

that is very good news

Dr. Pfeiffer :

more likely a polyp or fibroid in the uterus or cervix.

Dr. Pfeiffer :

could possibly be abnormal cells on the cervix

Dr. Pfeiffer :

less likely an infection

Customer:

i did have an ovarian cyst that ruptured about two years ago, but there was no bleeding at the time

Dr. Pfeiffer :

you can see some bleeding with a ruptured cyst, but it typically only lasts a couple of days or so...

Dr. Pfeiffer :

not 2 months

Customer:

right

Dr. Pfeiffer :

so...I think you can rest a bit easier over the weekend and give your doctor a call on Monday...

Customer:

so is there anything I should ask or expect my doctor to do re these symptoms?

Dr. Pfeiffer :

you should have a pap test, pelvic exam and ultrasound just to confirm..

Customer:

I understand he will do a pap smear

Customer:

ok

Customer:

great, thank you so much

Dr. Pfeiffer :

sure

Dr. Pfeiffer :

have a nice weekend

Customer:

thank you
