I am 16 months since last period (55 years old), with little or no vaginal secretions. Just recently went swimming in lake, have vaginal secretion/discharge (smells sweet). Also experiencing pain in left ovary area. I can't find anything in medical book to pinpoint anything. Do you have any suggestions what this could be?

Dr. Pfeiffer :

hello

Customer:

hi

Dr. Pfeiffer :

so..no bleeding? just discharge?

Dr. Pfeiffer :

any itching or irritation at all?

Customer:

No bleeding, just slight discharge (smells quite sweet), no itching, no irritation

Dr. Pfeiffer :

how long has this been going on?

Dr. Pfeiffer :

do you have any medical problems such as diabetes?

Customer:

for approx. 2 weeks. I was quite dry before and now quite lubricated. No other medical problems

Dr. Pfeiffer :

ok. any change in urinary symptoms?

new sexual partners?

Customer:

No to urinary question and no to the other one - married to same guy for 36 years.

Dr. Pfeiffer :

ok.

Dr. Pfeiffer :

so a sweet smelling discharge doesn't ring a bell with anything serious.

Dr. Pfeiffer :

the only bacterial infection I can think of that might give off a 'sweet' smell and be in water is pseudomonas

Customer:

Good! I was hoping this was just "normal" menopausal symptoms......

Dr. Pfeiffer :

but, I cannot every recalling seeing it vaginally

Dr. Pfeiffer :

well...there are normal changes for sure.

Dr. Pfeiffer :

one thing is called vaginal atrophy...or atrophic vaginitis.

Dr. Pfeiffer :

that usually presents with a yellow or green vaginal discharge that smells fishy rather than sweet.

Customer:

Yes, definitely isn't the fishy smell. I will google and look all that up or google and see what I find out. Thanks!

Dr. Pfeiffer :

sure...

I think I would have an exam and culture of the discharge just to be sure..

Customer:

Yes, I will do that - thanks!!! signing off

Dr. Pfeiffer :

you're welcome..

I would appreciate you rating my service.

thank you
