I just had some thick clear, blood tinged mucous discharge.

This answer was rated:

I just had some thick clear, blood tinged mucous discharge. I've never had anything like this before. I should be starting my period tomorrow, I'm very regular on a 27 day cycle, although I did have two cycles last month(I also started hanging out with another female often last month and the month before). I've never had anything like this befoe. There is no more bleeding. My normal cycle is very heavy and crampy with thin dark blood, and this was very bright with no cramping. I have 2 children and am only sexually active with my husband of almost 6 years. Is there any cause for concern? Thank you.

Dr. Pfeiffer :

hello

Dr. Pfeiffer :

are you there?

Customer: I am!
Dr. Pfeiffer :

great

Dr. Pfeiffer :

so..regular periods

clear, blood tinged discharge

Dr. Pfeiffer :

never happened before, but you have been hanging out with a new female friend recently.

Dr. Pfeiffer :

no risk for infection/std

Dr. Pfeiffer :

got it

Dr. Pfeiffer :

are you on any medication, birth control, etc?

Customer: Right
Customer: No meds or birth control
Dr. Pfeiffer :

any breast tenderness or possibilites of pregnancy?

Customer: Breast tenderness has been worse the last couple months. Unsure about pregnancy, due to start my regular cycle tomorrow, but have had intercourse with my husband, only twie this month
Dr. Pfeiffer :

ok...it only takes once!!

Dr. Pfeiffer :

anyway, if you miss your period tomorrow, give it a few days and take a pregnancy test just to make sure.

Customer: I know! Moremoften would be nice, tough with a 4 year old!
Dr. Pfeiffer :

haha

Dr. Pfeiffer :

I understand...5 and 10 y/o at home

Customer: Is mucous discharge common?
Dr. Pfeiffer :

sure, but it's normally a sign of ovulation.

Dr. Pfeiffer :

like mid cycle

Dr. Pfeiffer :

outside of that it is usually a hormonal shift or inflammation...

Dr. Pfeiffer :
Dr. Pfeiffer :

now, we do know that women who spend lots of time together start to menstruate and cycle together.

Customer: What about the blood? It was bright red and streaky.
Dr. Pfeiffer :

an interesting phenomenon that struck me as quite odd when I first started in gynecology.

Customer: Yeah, i wasn't surprised by the second cycle last moth, I know about syncing
Dr. Pfeiffer :

bright bleeding is usually not menstrual bleeding...and that can also be due to hormonal changes, polyps, fibroids, etc

Dr. Pfeiffer :

you've had normal pap tests each year right?

Dr. Pfeiffer :
Customer: So far, due for this years in a month.
Dr. Pfeiffer :

ok..great

Dr. Pfeiffer :

given your age and the transient nature of this episode..I don't think it sounds like anything serious

Dr. Pfeiffer :

If you miss your period...take the pregnancy test.

Customer: Okay, thank you!
Dr. Pfeiffer :

if that's negative I suspect this is a transient 'hormonal mutany' probably due to the synching

Dr. Pfeiffer :

if it persists beyond another cycle or two, I'd probably ask for an ultrasound just to check for polyps/fibroids in the uterus.

Customer: Sounds strange! Mutany?
Dr. Pfeiffer :

sarcasm....

Dr. Pfeiffer :

hormonal imbalance

Dr. Pfeiffer :

basically meaning your hormones are not cooperating with your body

Customer: I was told I have a fibroid on the right external of my uterus when I was pregnant wth my daughter 10 years ago, but my OB couldn't find anything when I was pregnant with my son 5 years ago
Dr. Pfeiffer :

ok...

it's probably still there and they do get bigger with time

Dr. Pfeiffer :

could be the cause too.

Customer: Alright. Thank you again! I'll watch for my cycle and take a test if I miss it.
Dr. Pfeiffer :

sounds like a good plan

Dr. Pfeiffer :

If you have additional questions please ask…I want you to be a satisfied customer.

Dr. Pfeiffer :

If not, please take the time to rate my service as 'excellent'...providing you feel it's appropriate.

Dr. Pfeiffer :

And, in the future do not hesitate to request me for any other questions.

Dr. Pfeiffer :

Good luck to you

Dr. Pfeiffer

Customer: Other than questions about uow to ahnele a fibroid, I thinl you've answered this one!
Customer: How to handle, terrible spelling!
Dr. Pfeiffer :

really...nothing is required.

if there is not pain or abnormal bleeding..they are completely benign.

Dr. Pfeiffer :

if it causes a persistent problem we can take them out.

Customer: Heavy cramping has been normal for me since I started my cycles.
Dr. Pfeiffer :

that might be a touch of endometriosis.

Customer: Thank you so much! Have a great night, or morning depending on where you are I guess!
Dr. Pfeiffer :

ibuprofen a few days before you period start and through your period might help that.

Dr. Pfeiffer :

ok..
