My girlfriend is 5 weeks pregnant and suspects she is having a miscarriage. She has had minor cramping. She took a pregnancy test and it said she was negative even though we had several positives a week ago. She is classified as high risk. She will definitely go into the doctor, but can a negative pregnancy test be an overwhelming indicator of miscarriage? I am just trying to ease her worries before she goes to the doctor.

Hello Dr. Owen. What is your opinion on my girlfriends condition?
Please do NOT click on any ratings yet...When was her Last Positive pregnancy test? When was the Negative test? When was her period SUPPOSE to start?
July 18th was the last positive test and July 17th, she was suppose to start her period
When did she have negative pregnancy tests? Is she bleeding? When was she suppose to start?
supposed to start on July 17th
Negative pregnancy test today. No bleeding, Cervix still closed, but she does have cramping
Has she done a second pregnancy test from a different brand of pregnancy tests?
no
More than likely she had miscarried given that she has a negative pregnancy test - and it would not be that unusual for this to happen...But, you do a repeat pregnancy test and get back to me?
ok will do. thanks
I will talk to you then...
Dr. Owen,
Genevieve went to her family Dr. Also, i did not mention that she is getting bruises all over her legs. No injury or impact. The Dr. said she could have blood clotting. The second test from the Dr. office was negative. Not good. However, she is not passing blood and has actually lost 6 lbs. in one day. I wonder if it is water weight. She has been eating asparagus. She is going to see OB Dr. I feel that she miscarried.
What is the result of the pregnancy test now?
Relist: Other.I am being asked questions that I have already included the answers for. This is not help! it is an aggravation. No thanks to this process
Hello, and thank you for your question. I will be happy to assist you. Answers are for educational purposes only.
Hi, I am sorry this process has been difficult for you so far. I will do my best to provide you with insightful and helpful information.
Given that she has had two separate negative pregnancy tests now, then she is not pregnant. This is very common for miscarriages to happen this early in the process. If it has not happened yet, I would expect her to get her period by one month after the loss. If there is any residual question about the pregnancy, then a blood test (serum quantitative BHCG) can be checked. If it is negative, then she is definitely not pregnant. If it is elevated, then she should have it repeated two days later to see which direction it is going, and if down, continue the levels until they are zero. Most miscarriages that happen this early are due to a genetic problem. Through no fault of anyone, up to 50% of early pregnancies are unable to continue because of a chromosomal abnormality that prevents the pregnancy from developing and surviving.
In regard to her weight loss and bruising, she should have some tests to see what the cause of this is. Typically you would check a complete blood count with a peripheral smear. Additionally, she should get checked for other bleeding disorders such as hemophilia and von willebrands disease. Her family doctor can do this, but also a hematologist (a specialist is blood diseases) can evaluate her.
I hope this is more helpful. Please respond if you have any questions or need any clarification and I will be happy to answer. My goal is to provide you with excellent service. Best of luck to your friend.
