Customer Question

My breast hurt, expecially the left one. I am 27yrs. I've always had irregular periods all my life. I already got tested for pregnancy and I know is not that because my husband has been out of the state for 5months now...anyway, they have never hurt this much ever. They feel tingly and then like pinching needles. They are warm and tender. I do exercise and find that it made it worse so I stopped. I don't know what the problem is and I don't have any lumps or discharge. Please, help. I can't sleep or sit or lie down. Every position hurts. They feel like heavy bags of sand. Im 36c if that helps any. I'm not that big.

Greetings,

How long the symptoms are there? How frequently do you feel it? How are your last few cycles? Is there any other symptom? Is there any other significant past illness?

Regards.

The pain has been going on for a few days, four maybe. I feel it all the time. The tingly feeling is there all the time, especially when I sit down. The needles pinching feeling only happens when I've caused them stress by walking or leaning or something. Two months ago, I had this exact thing happen to me and it went away but before it went away it got so bad, I couldnt sleep or stay still. The pain was beyond ten and constant. I went to a clinic and they gave me cephalexin and naproxen. I took the pills and it did go away, though the bacteria medicine gave me a yeast infection. That all happened in april and then in june I got strep throat and scarlet fever. My skin was still peeling after two weeks of it. And now I have this breast pain thing again, which hasn't happened since april and before that it had never happened in my life. I do have irregular menstrual cycles. Some times I can go half a year without a single period and that has always been the case. I used to be anemic before I had my son. I was underweight then. I'm good now. I'm 5'4, 27yrs, 140lbs now.

Thank you for the input,

Pain in breast & tenderness can occur due to a few factors. It can be due to hormonal changes. As you have irregular period, hormonal imbalance is more possible. In some cases there can be inflammation. As the pain is more, you can try with motrin or naproxen. I would advise to get it examined by doctor again. If doctor thinks necessary, he can advise a mammogram after examination.

Hi, again

I think you are right with the inflammation and hormonal imbalance but if so, why has it not ever happened before until now? Is there something I'm doing that is making it worse. What causes the inflammation? Last time, the breast that hurt was the right one and now its the left one. I was told that my working out with the wrong bra, which I probably do, is causing the pain, but again, if so why hasn't it happened before. I just would like to know what I'm doing different that is causing it to hurt when it has never hurt before and my body has been doing all the things it did before. I did move out to the country in March, that is the only new thing in my life. I'm less active but I actually eat more healthy now than I have ever done. I just want to know if its something I'm doing or not doing that is causing it. I want to know so I can stop or start it.

Thank you,

Why you did not have such symptoms before, it is difficult to comment. Environmental change can be a factor. Hormonal change can cause cyclical breast pain which occur with every menstrual cycle. As you do not have regular period, hormonal imbalance can be a factor. It can occur due to non cyclical breast pain where no cause is detected. However, a mammogram, ultrasound can be taken to rule out any fibrocystic disease or fibroadenoma, tumor etc.. When it is a new symptom, it should be checked to know the precise cause.Dr. SS41106.2971506597

Hi, again (sorry, I keep bothering you)

Yes, my periods have been infrequent. I did get it in June and no breast pain. April and July no period: breast pain. I read something that says that symptoms of hormone imbalance in women may begin as early as the late twenties to the forties and they tend to increase as a woman ages, especially if ignored in the earlier years. And then they, mentioned the symptoms and I have a few of them. Another thing I read about Progesterone deficiency and I have some of those symptoms too like the weight gain especially over the belly area, irregular periods, pain in breasts, fatigue, Onset of insomnia (its almost 4am and i'm still awake) Lowered immune system, Migraines and headaches, Excess water retention, Night sweating, Changes in appetite, and the Inability to lose weight. Some of these change from time to time but I was wondering if that maybe what it is?
Also, I do just eat one meal a day and then snacks. I exercise a lot but I don't really consume the amount I burn. I don't take vitamins, which I started today to make up for the skip meals and I want not to skip meals but I sleep most of the day because I'm up at night. It wasn't as bad when I worked because I had no choice but to get up at 5 in the morning but now that i'm no longer working, I sleep more, eat more and I seem to get sick more often. I want to be healthy and maybe this is what I get for eating junk most of my life but I've never been overweight and I've always worked out. I have decided to take care of myself more and I will, as soon as I get better from this pain thing. Is it really going to happen every month? It didn't happen last month but it did the month before that. I don't know. I think I'm just rambling now.
How can I get my hormones balance? I feel that the times when I eat better I get my period more frequently. Should I change something in my lifestyle, diet?
One other thing, it has nothing to do with my boobs bouncing up and down when I work out right? Cause I didn't really think that was it. But exercise has made it worse, I've discovered.
Thank You,

You should get an appointment with gynecologist. Gynecologist can do an assessment. Low thyroid hormone can cause weight gain, excessive sleepiness. If you have not been checked it out recently, you can have test for it. Excessive sleeping, and eating without enough loss of calori like less movement, not going outside, can produce weight gain too. Walking is a good exercise to loose weight and to be active. Hormone tests can be done to know the exact level whether any further treatment will be required. Sometimes oral contraceptive pills are used to regulate the hormonal imbalance. After all the tests, doctor can suggest oral contraceptive pills. Mammogram can help to rule out breast pathology.

Hi, Dr. SS (this is the last one)

When I was 19yrs they did recommend oral contraceptives and that did get my menstrual cycle back on track, so do you think if my period was back on track and I ate healthier and exercised and was just overall better then my breast won't hurt anymore? And do you think it is hormone imbalance and no infection or working out ligament muscle messed up or something because it was not last time I went.

Thank you,

Hormonal imbalance can be the most probable cause. Oral contraceptives can help in this situation. If it is infection, it could be severe by this time. Muscle pain can be helped by taking motrin or naproxen. You can try with it till you see doctor. But other causes should be ruled out by having an examination by doctor.

Hi, Dr. SS (sorry, this one is really the last)

"If it is infection, it could be sever by this time."

What do you mean?

And when I go to my ob will he just run all the test at once or will he just check the breast and see what to check for? My insurance is about done since I quit my job and so, I don't want to go to the doctor unless I really need to.

Thank you, XXXXX XXXXX!

You have taken cephalexin. If it is infection, at that time, the symptoms can be less, but it did not. If the chronic infection persists, there can be other symptoms like fever, redness, pus discharge etc. You can go to a free clinic for a preliminary assessment. A mammogram should be taken. If the doctor thinks, he can advise you to take oral contraceptive pills without further testing.
