Customer Question

Hello, I have a sort of blister on in the inner part of the labia majora, closer to the the vagina than the clitoris. I had sex with my partner 3 days prior to experiencing itching in the spot, later in the day I realised a bump manifested, which on day four looks more like a blister. It's still itching, there's pain, and I am almost sure of an increase in vaginal discharge, no smelling, no discoloration, just an increase. Please advise as I foresee a nasty confrontation if this is an STD!

Optional Information:
Person's Age: 35

Already Tried:
placed some aloe vera gel on the area to ease the itching

Dr. Owen :

Hello, and I am pleased to help, use of my answers are for educational purposes only.

Dr. Owen :

Hello

Dr. Owen :

Let me read through your questions

Customer :

hello

Customer :

are you there doctor?

Dr. Owen :

I am here

Dr. Owen :

will be right with you

Customer :

ok

Dr. Owen :

Please stay here

Customer :

ok

Dr. Owen :

Can you describe the exact location, and size

Dr. Owen :

is the blister filled with clear fluid?

Customer :

It is on the inner part of the labia, more like on the flat surface where no hair grows

Customer :

I am not sure how to determine the size, maybe size of a mosquito bump

Customer :

it seems clear

Dr. Owen :

so Inside the vagina?

Dr. Owen :

is it clear or red bump?

Customer :

no not inside the vagina, its a clear bump

Dr. Owen :

okay - just one or multiple

Dr. Owen :

and is it LOWER in the vagina - ?

Customer :

looks like one, yes lower

Dr. Owen :

okay and it hurts to touch?

Customer :

inner part of the labia majora

Customer :

yes it hurts to touch

Customer :

and the area itches

Dr. Owen :

you might have what is known as a Bartholin's gland duct cyst

Dr. Owen :

which is essentially a blockage of a duct and hence an accumalation of fluid

Dr. Owen :

You can try taking a hot /warm bath to see if this helps

Dr. Owen :

And, if this gets bigger then usually it should be drained if you can not get it to drain yourself.

Dr. Owen :

Does your boyfriend have any STD's

Dr. Owen :

Have you ever had any STD's such as Herpes?

Customer :

doc I'm just trying to ensure i've described the correct spot....does the bartholin cyst occur more on the labia minora?

Customer :

no I've never had an STD as far I know

Dr. Owen :

the bartholin's could be low in the labia minora and can extend to the majora

Dr. Owen :

this could be a herpes lesion - but usually herpes had a LOT of small blisters that have clear fluid, not just a single blister.

Customer :

I cant be 100 percent sure of my boyfriend, I've never seen him with anything or heard him speak of any since our 5 yr relationship....

would the herpes lesion occur within 3 days of intercourse?

Customer :

the last time we had intercourse prior to that was maybe a month or more

Dr. Owen :

Usually the herpes lesions takes a few weeks, not just 3 days

Dr. Owen :

so, I would recommend getting a STD check, just to be sure

Dr. Owen :

And, if a BArtholin's cyst - your doctor can drain it too - to make you feel a lot beter

Dr. Owen :

better

Customer :

would the cyst go away on its own?

Dr. Owen :

It can

Dr. Owen :

and to prevent any cysts that is why we use birth control - birth control has many uses and we as ob/gyn's use them also to prevent ovarian cysts, to prevent ovarian cancer, to prevent irregular bleeding, and to prevent pain - so birth control be it the pill, the patch or the ring has many very good uses

Customer :

Dr. Owen :

Thank you

Customer :

just one

what about the slight increase in discharge?

Dr. Owen :

The discharge could be normal - but could be due to the fact you have some problems with this irritation

Dr. Owen :

And, when you have irritation - there can be a discharge.

Customer :

even if the irritation occurs outside the vagina?

Dr. Owen :

yes, because when you have irritation - this can cause a discharge and a pH imbalance in the vagina and hence you can have this discharge

Customer :

ok thank you doctor

you are welcome
