Customer Question

I had a repeat c-section 6 months ago and haven't stopped hurting and bleeding since. I'm on Gianvi birth control, and topamax migraine medication. I'm very scared because my stomach/pelvic & back pain + the bleeding is getting worse everyday. My grandmother said that cancer runs in our family ( mothers side ) and all the women have had hysterectomies before 50 my own grandmother being 35. I'm making another appt tomorrow but it takes a minute to get in. Any advise?

Monika Hearne, M.D. : Hello, I would be happy to assist you.
Monika Hearne, M.D. : certainly your pain should have resolved months ago and your bleeding as well.
Monika Hearne, M.D. : I recommend you return to your ob/gyn and have an ultrasound performed to determine the cause of your pain and bleeding. If normal, I recommend you consider surgery to investigate the cause given its prolonged nature.
Monika Hearne, M.D. : If you have something like uterine fibroids, these are common benign masses in the uterus that can cause bleeding and pain. If found, our first recommendation is birth control. However, since the pills have not been effective, surgical removal of the fibroids may be necessary.
Monika Hearne, M.D. : Fibroids are a common reason that women have a hysterectomy performed and they do run in families.
Monika Hearne, M.D. : You are young, so your risk for having cancer is extremely low. And since you just had a c-section 6 months ago, your doctor should have seen something during the time of your surgery if you now have so much cancer that you are in pain. So, cancer is the least likely cause.
Monika Hearne, M.D. : I wish you the best. If you have additional questions, please ask. If none, please click "Accept." Thank you.
Monika Hearne, M.D. : It seems as if you may have had difficulty with the chat. I will change the format for you.
Monika Hearne, M.D. : Exit and reenter the question and it should work better for you.

I am honored to assist you. My answers are for information purposes only. They don’t substitute for a visit to a doctor’s office. Doctor/patient relationship is not established.

Uterine cancer usually doesn't cause pain. It is unlikely you have uterine cancer. Most likely you have fibroids. They can't be often controlled with birth control pills. If you want more children, you should have just the fibroids removed. If you don't want children any more, hysterectomy or uterine artery embolization is the option. Another very rare possibility is uterine sarcoma which is cancer of fibroids.

If you have additional questions, please ask for additional clarification instead of simply stating relist. This can better help us understand what is not clear as we want you to be satisfied with your answer. Now that there is another expert involved, please ask which of us you would prefer to answer any follow up questions you may have. Thank you.

Hello, this is Dr K99. Answers are not medical advice and do not constitute a Dr/patient relationship. Please consult your Dr for medical advice.

Some degree of prolonged pain is common after c section for as long as 12 weeks in many women This is due to stretching of tissues and tearing of muscles and ligaments. It may also be due to nerve damage.

The amount of bleeding that you are having does not appear to be normal. It is likely that alot of the pain, discomfort, and continued back pain is due to the irregular bleeding. You should see your Dr to change your pill and get on a regiment to control the bleeding quickly.

Back pain after C section can also be due to urinary tract infection, which can be screened for at a Drs visit. It may also be due to musculo skeletal pain. Often women respond very well to a short course of physical therapy.

Cancer is a remote possibility at best. Uterine cancer grows in the uterine lining and takes many years to develop. As you have just had a pregnancy and C section, this is not a possibility. You do not need to be afraid of uterine cancer at this point. In addition if you had large fibroids, its likely that your Dr would have seen them at C section and advised you of this. Good luck!
