Customer Question

I have been told that i have a retroverted uterus. i had adhesions from an emergency exploratory surgery i had as a teen, and then a laproscopy surgery to remove adhesions and an ovarian cyst a few months later. They told me i would never get pregnant. i got pregnant about 4 years later with my son. when he was four months old, i got pregnant with my daughter, they told me i got pregnant with her only because my uterus had not returned to its retroverted position. My daughter is now 15 years old and i have tried to get pregnant for the last 14 years without success. i do have pain with sex when i am on top, i feel extreme pressure and mood swings with my period which is regular. at one point my GYN said i could get a "clip" to fix that painful ligament, but i never did. Will i be able to have another child and what would be the best way to do that?

Hello, this is Dr K99. Answers are not medical advice and do not constitute a Dr/patient relationship. Please consult your Dr for medical advice

A retroverted uterus alone does not cause infertility. About 1 in 4 women have a retroverted uterus. Pain with sex may indicated endometriosis which causes adhesions.

You have what is called secondary infertility which is infertility occuring in a women who has previously had children. I am assuming that you have the same partner and he is the father of the two children that you have.

The best thing to do is to see a specialist in infertility, called a Reproductive Endocrinologist and begin an infertility workup. This will initially involve a semen analyis, blood work on you, a HSG which is a dye test to see if your tubes are open, and other testing. It is possible that the specialist will uncover a cause for the inferitility. It is not the retroverted uterus alone.

I am available for followup questions.
