I have had irregular periods since October of 2009. Some months I don't even get one. before this time, my periods were very regular. Last month, I had a brown blood discharge about 2 weeks before my period should have started. I should have gotten my period May 1, but I haven't gotten it. I am sexually active, but have taken about 25 preg test since October because of all the irregular periods and ALL have come back negative. What are other causes of this? Also, I am gaining about 1 pound every 2 days.

Hi,Thank you for your question. It is an honor to be of some assistance to you. Your cycles are irregular now because you have stopped ovulating regularly which most women do on an monthly basis. Hang in there as this is very common. Women can stop ovulating due to a number of reasons: hypothyroidism, diet changes, exercise changes, stress, weight changes, medications, etc... My advice is to make and appointment with your doctor to discuss these changes. She will likely need to do a few simple blood tests to evaluate your thyroid gland and some hormone levels and then she can discuss with you ways to regulate your cycle (or help you get pregnant). I hope you find this information helpful. Please, do not hesitate to ask me any questions in the future or to request me. Remember, this communication does not replace a visit to the doctor. Good Luck and Well Wishes,Dr. Haver
Should I see my regular family doctor or my ob/gyn?
I would suggest an OBGYN as they have more expertise in this matter.
