Mitosis is necessary to cell duplication. The chromosome number is XXXXX before and after mitosis.
Meiosis is necessary to reproduction (sperms and eggs). The chromosome number is XXXXX half after meiosis. Then after fertilization, the chromosome number goes back to normal number. Without meiosis, the chromosome number is XXXXX and contains sex chromosomes XXXY after fertilization. It may cause abnormal changes and abnormal sex of the cell.

An organism needs mitosis when the cells in the organism divide and grow. Meiosis is needed for the sex cells in the organism for reproductive purposes. For example, eggs and sperms need meiosis. Meiosis increases the genetic variation which allows for evolution and the adaptation of organisms to different environments. Without meiosis, the evolution will not occur and the organism can't adapt to new environments.
