PAIN, abnormal bleeding and vaginal mucus-like discharge

Customer Question

I am concerned and would like advice on what may be wrong and need to decide if this is an urgent matter... I have an appointment with my Family Doctor in a couple days.

I am experiencing abnormal bleeding and vaginal mucus-like discharge for 10 days now. There is no odour, no itching and the discharge started as blood at first, then clotted, and now is stringy, mucus-like and clear.
I am also experiencing constant lower abdominal area/pelvic area pain, cramping and pressure for approx 1 month now. Pain is still present and seems to be getting worse. No vaginal pain, feels more like cervix or uterus. Pain worsens and throbs when bladder is full. Occasional sharp stabbing pains but mostly throbbing/aching.

I had some spotting between periods last cycle. My periods are very regular and I have never had bleeding between periods before. Here is my recent cycle data:

Feb 6th -Day 1 with usual PMS symptoms (sore breast, mild cramping)
Feb 20th – light spotting (4 days)
Cramping, dull achy pain and pressure (fullness feeling) - still present & getting worse

March 8th - Day 1 with no PMS symptoms
March 18th - spotting, discharge begins -still present

General Info:
Full-term, normal pregnancy in 2003, no complications. I have been trying to conceive for over 10 months with no luck. I stopped taking oral contraceptives 12 months ago. Regular 30 day menstrual cycle. Pregnancy tests taken over the last month are all negative.

Thanks for reply and cooperation.
From your history it seems that you are not ovulating in each cycle and having with hyper estrogenic condition results in irregular spotting.Other symptoms resembles with some infection like pelvic inflammatory disease. So in your case the cause of failure to conceive may be due to failure to ovulate or any tubal block.
Thank you

My main concern is not the failure to concieve, but rather the pain & discharge I am experiencing. I am concerned that this is not normal and there may be something wrong.

Thanks
I already mentioned it as some infection probably from pelvic inflammatory disease. One ultra sonogram may confirm it by showing presence of fluid in the pouch of Douglas.

I would like to know more about what may be causing my symptom
Expert:  Monika Hearne, M.D. replied 4 years ago.
Hello, I would be happy to assist you. The constellation of symptoms you mention are characteristic of uterine fibroids. These are benign uterine masses that can cause every symptom you have listed above. Fibroids are very common. They can grow quite large and when they do they cause issues with pain, pressure, abnormal bleeding, and discharge. Fibroids can be located outside, in the muscle, or inside the uterus. When they are inside the uterus, they can interfere with conception or cause other fertility issues. You can keep your appointment with your general practitioner as he can order an ultrasound to evaluate your uterus. He should then refer you to an ob/gyn to discuss treatment options. Fibroids can be removed. However, we usually recommend you delay conception for a while, 6 weeks-one year, depending on the number and location of the fibroids. I hope this helps. Feel free to ask additional questions if necessary. Best wishes.

I was told by another obgyn that I am likely to be experiencing incomplete miscarriage
. What are your thoughts on this possibility?
Expert:  Monika Hearne, M.D. replied 4 years ago.
Thanks for allowing me to help. If you've never had a positive pregnancy test, this is not a possibility. Also, with an incomplete miscarriage, the pregnancy test would remain positive until at least a week/up to a month after the miscarriage is completed. A pregnancy test would quickly exclude this as a possibility.
