I have a Nissan Leaf. At times it will not recognize my key

Customer Question

I have a Nissan Leaf. At times it will not recognize my key so I cannot start my Leaf. Is this a common problem?

Good morning,

Trouble with the smart keys on these cars isn't common per se- or at least specific to the leaf- but Nissan has had some issues with the smart keys in general.

Do you have any other keys on the key-ring that might be transmitting a signal (like for another vehicle)?

Do you have a wireless phone charger plugged in?

Home security key fob or garage door opener?

I have another key for Toyota 2016 Rav4

That might be problem. I would try removing that key from the key ring for a few days and see if the problem goes away.

ok. I will try that and see what happens.

I tried your suggestion by isolating smart key from other smart key. Still did not work. Tried a solution found on YouTube in which I push start button with smart key and it worked. I will replace battery to see if that helps.

Ok, that makes sense. The pressing the button with the key trick is typically a remedy for a dead key fob battery. You probably just have a low key fob battery and it's not sending a very strong signal to the car.
