Customer Question

2012 sentra- tried to start this morning and got no ignition. engine turned over but wouldn't catch. battery got low, so jumped it. no luck, eventually sounded like old fashioned condenser rattle. had problem starting 2 days ago, but it caught with a jump.no difficulty between then and now.
JA: How old is the battery? And have you tested it with a voltmeter?
Customer: bought it with used car. no meter to test it with.
JA: Are you fixing your Sentra yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: going to try to myself, but very limited experience with more modern cars.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: cleaned corrosion off terminals when first had problem this morning. had smoke tendrils coming from battery cell on last try to start.

Hi, I'm Ron and I will be helping you today.
Stand by for a moment while I prepare your answer.

The problem can be a loss of spark or fuel. You can check for
spark at the plugs with a spark tester.
You can check fuel pressure with a gauge and both of these tools
should be available to you at your
local parts store for rent or purchase.
You need to check for any stored codes in the computer with a
code reader or a scan tool.
The code reader only gives the codes and definitions, where the
scan tool gives you all
the needed data to diagnose the codes.

Thanks, Ron
