Cant get the starter out of a 2001 pathfinder front wheel

Customer Question

cant get the starter out of a 2001 pathfinder front wheel drive
JA: When you turn the key, do you get a single loud click, or a series of rapid ones?
Customer: a series of rapid ones
JA: Are you fixing your Pathfinder yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: i have the starter disconnected and unbolted, just can't get it out past the axel on the four wheel drive
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: no

Hey there, thanks for the question.

thanks for responding. any suggestions on how to get the starter out?
Expert:  Jake replied 1 month ago.

well on the 4wd it helps to have the splash guards out of the way and the starter will come up and out around the motor mount it's just like playing a game of tetris to get it to drop down. If you had the long extensions to get the bolts out then your almost there.

My biggest concern is that you said you have a series of rapid clicks when trying to start, that is NOT a sign of a bad starter, but instead a weak or dead battery.

Expert:  Jake replied 1 month ago.

you "might" be playing tetris with your pathy for no reason at all IF thats the case.

I should take it out from the top. all guards are off the bottom of the vehicle, the solid Axel from the transfer case is what is holding the starter up
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
the battery is new, that was the first thing I replaced yesterday.
Expert:  Jake replied 1 month ago.

not from the top. towards the front of the vehicle

Expert:  Jake replied 1 month ago.

you have to go over the axle towards the front and finally drop it out

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
OK I will give it a try
Expert:  Jake replied 1 month ago.

Sounds good, it's ok to spike it like a football once it's out. it's a bit annoying to say the least haha.
