My exterra has an alarm that is stuck on so we cannot start

Customer Question

Hi mike my exterra has an alarm that is stuck on so we cannot start it. We have already changed the batteries in the fob, removed battery cables and re-hooked up, messed with the locks in the doors and we still cannot get the alarm to shutoff

Hello my name is ***** ***** thank you for your question.

When the alarm is going off are the parking lights flashing? or the head lights?

The reason I am asking this is so I can identify which alarm is going off to help you.

Let me know.

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Hi Jay... It is just the headlights
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

Thank you. That is the factory alarm. Try using the mechanical key to lock and unlock the truck from the drivers door. If that doesn't shut it off, then try the passenger door or hatch.

Let me know how you make out..

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Already have tried that.... No luck
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

Then the next step is to pull a door panel to access the tamper switch. The Tamper switch is what connects to the door lock cylinders. If turning the key in the door and locking and unlocking it does not turn off the factory alarm, then you have to connect the tamper switch. This link is a image of what it looks like and how it connects to the lock cylinder.

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Okay.....once we get that done what should we do?
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

Connect the tamper switch. When you lock the car with the key you should see the security light turn solid for 10 to 20 seconds then start to flash. Using the key will then deactivate the alarm.

Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

Do you need a diagram on how the door panel is secured so you can remove it?

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
I have already broken it😞
Customer: replied 11 months ago.
but yes since it isn't off yet and I am just swearin at it now.... That may be helpful😏
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

Sorry you broke it. Let me know if you need any more info on this.

Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

ok.. Hang on..

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Well now.... I know why I broke it now! 😜 Okay I am on this
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

Ok.. Let me know how you make out and if you have any more questions on this or need any more info.

Thanks Jay!

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Yeah so that isn't working
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

You found the tamper switch in the door?

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
We did find something hooked to the lock.....but it looks all corroded?!!?!
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

Can you take a picture of it and insert it here to show me what you are seeing?

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
I can try to take a picture let me see if I can
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

ok

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Ok I'm trying to send the pictures
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

I got the pictures, Thank you.

Any chance of getting a picture of the back of the lock cylinder?

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
No the area is too close.... By back you are talking a view from inside the car correct?
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

Yes, inside the door. do you see the tamper switch connected to the lock cylinder?

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
I can't find a switch at all in there, although I am just blindly feeling around
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

Try feeling down toward the latch of the door. You need to find it.

Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

That is the area you want to look in the door.

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Ok.... I can feel something in there like a little lever
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

That may be it.. .

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
I pulled it down, and it sprang back into place
Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Sorry it is taking so long.... I really am trying
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

No worries.. If we need to keep this question open and continue tomorrow we can do that also.

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Ok.... Are you willing to keep going just a little while longer?
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

Sure... I am here till you call it.

Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

Please don't feel pressure. I am here for a while yet. So take your time. If you need a flash light to look into the door to find that tamper switch, please do so

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
You are wonderful!! Thank you... I just sent a picture of the area you told me to look in to see if you had any ideas to narrow it down at all
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

ok.. Looks like the tamper switch may be snapped on to the lock cylinder by the looks of this picture.

Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

look at that closely if you can. Put the key in the lock cylinder and turn the key and see if you can see if flipping the switch.

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
When I turn the key I see a little piece of metal moving within the lock cylinder
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

Can you close the door with the door panel off and see if when you lock the door the security light turns solid for 10 to 20 seconds, then blinks?

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
The security light on my dash is out....
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

It does not come on at all? even when the door is open?

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
No.... It doesn't come on at all... It was on before all of this happened... And now it's just off
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

See if the truck starts now or if the alarm goes off ?

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
It goes off as soon as I touch the handle and it won't even try to turn over
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

It's just the head lights that flash the inside dash lights don't flash ?

Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

Do you have a Test light?

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
sir just the headlights
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

I take it you pulled the horn fuse so the horns don't sound correct?

Do you have a test light?

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
I pulled the horn fuse because I live close to people haha
And a test light.... I can get tomorrow!
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

I would like to check all fuses with the test light tomorrow. This alarm should have turned off by using the key in either of the front doors or Hatch. Since it didn't, I am wondering if there is a fuse blown which is keeping the alarm active and not allowing the door tamper switches to operate.

That is how fuses are checked with a test light. You have a fuse box inside the car and under the hood by the battery.

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Ok, well could we pick up this again tomorrow? It is getting rather late here anyways and I have an early morning
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

Not a problem. I will be online again tomorrow.

Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

Just return back to this question so we can continue.

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Thank you very much for everything! I will talk to you tomorrow! Good night
Expert:  Jay replied 11 months ago.

Your welcome. Talk to you tomorrow and you have a good night also!
