Titan: I have a 2006 titan 5.6 I've never had any problems

Customer Question

I have a 2006 titan 5.6 I've never had any problems with it. Has 203,000 miles. I looked down and the oil gauge was pegged out. Then noticed that when I turned the key, but didn't crank it, it was already almost pegged. Is it safe to drive.

Hello, I'm Brandon. Where is the needle pegging? Have you check the oil level yet?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It's past the h on the gauge and yes I changed it and the filter

Can you hook up a mechanical oil pressure gauge and see what pressure is pushing out. I want to make sure the switch is working .
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Is a pressure gauge expensive. And where do I hook it up. I think I saw where in the Chilton book I have on it
Expert:  internal88 replied 1 year ago.
You could get one for under $50 dollars. You hook it up where the oil pressure switch is located.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
What should it read. It will take me a while to get it and get home
Expert:  internal88 replied 1 year ago.
Engine oil pressure should be around 14psi at idle and 43psi at 2000rpm.
Many common problem is due to bad oil pressure switch or stuck oil passage within the engine. what weight of oil do you use?
Expert:  internal88 replied 1 year ago.
Just hope it is not a bad oil pump that is causing the restriction. This would not be an easy job.
60% of time is the oil pressure switch.
30% of time is oil pump.
10% is a stuck oil filter or bad oil filter.

I will let you know as soon as possible
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Sorry it took so long but the pressure ran up to 82
Expert:  internal88 replied 1 year ago.
Ok so the oil pressure switch is working. This is telling me there is a restriction in the oil passage.
Expert:  internal88 replied 1 year ago.
Tell me what kind of engine oil and oil filter did you use?
Expert:  internal88 replied 1 year ago.
You need to open up the oil pan and make sure the oil pick up screen is not clogged.
Expert:  internal88 replied 1 year ago.
remove the oil pump pick up in the oil pan and clean it.
Expert:  internal88 replied 1 year ago.
Since this is a high mileage engine you might have metal particular stuck in the pick up.
Expert:  internal88 replied 1 year ago.
The next thing will be the removing of the relieve valve in the oil cooler inside of the oil filter housing. Before you do that I would like you to replace the oil filter with a factory Nissan filter first and try.
