Maxima SE: Hi, When I try to start my 98 maxima se, everything

This answer was rated:

Hi, When I try to start my 98 maxima se, everything goes dead, no dash light nothing & car will not start. I get nothing. I took the car to my mechanic, they test all the electrical, the starter, altenator etc etc. check the battery & cables. They could not find anything wrong. When they took off the battery cables to clean then, put them back, the car started. We then shut off the car and again everything dead nothing ?? Tried boosting and nothing. The mechanic said that has no idea what the problem is. Can you help me? Thanks

Jay :

Hello my name is XXXXX XXXXX thank you for your question.

Jay :

Does the head lights work when you turn them on?

Customer:

No lights, no dash lights no nothing.

Customer:

Hello, was having problems with justanswer, so now back on line with you.

Customer:

HI Jay I'm here

Jay :

Yeah the site has been having issues today

Jay :

So am I

Jay :

The battery cables where they connect to the battery, are any of them after market?

Jay :

Example

Jay :

If you wanted to remove a battery cable off the battery

Jay :

would you need to use a 13 mm wrench or a 10 mm wrench

Jay :

?

Customer:

Hi the mechanic removed the cabled after cleaning them reinstalled them car started, BUT after we shut off the the car same problem no start no lights no dash lights nothing

Jay :

It is most likely a bad battery terminal connection or terminal.

Jay :

How handy are you?

Customer:

I'm handy

Jay :

Do you have a 13 mm wrench or a 10 mm wrench to see if we can play around with the battery terminals to see if we can figure this out?

Customer:

I could, but the car is about 20 miles away from me. So I have no access to it currently.

Customer:

Would it be wise to change the battery & cables??

Customer:

Hi Jay, are you still there?

Jay :

How old is that battery?

Jay :

Let me explain what I do with this

Customer:

The battery is about 6 years old. could be more as was in car when brought it

Jay :

If the battery is that old, I would change the battery

Jay :

Batteries are only good normally 3 to 4 years

Jay :

So you got your moneys worth out of that battery

Jay :

I was going to say..

Customer:

Ok then I'll get it changed. If still have a prob I'll contact Justanswer.

Jay :

This is what I do

Jay :

So when your there if you still have a issue..

Jay :

What I do is turn the head lights on

Jay :

when the hood is open

Jay :

If they don't come on, then loosen one battery cable at the battery at a time

Jay :

Loosen and wiggle

Jay :

If you see the head lights flicker or come on, that is the cable with the issue

Jay :

Try wiggling it and tightening it down in a slightly different direction

Jay :

and see if it works

Jay :

Now

Jay :

If you find the head lights work, yet you have no other power through out the car

Jay :

Then you have a blown fusible link

Customer:

OK when I hit the battery terminal the car would sometimes start not always

Jay :

It's normally a battery terminal issue that cause this. The new battery will most likely help as well.

Customer:

OK I'll try all of your suggestions. thanks a whole lot for you time

Jay :

Your welcome and thank you for using JustAnswer.com

Jay :
